Child And Adolescent Services

Good oral health is essential for overall well-being, both for children and adults. Healthy oral habits are formed early, and at Advanced Dental, we strongly believe in prevention rather than treatment.

Research has shown that dental decay experienced at age 5 is a reliable indicator of decay at age 26. This means that if a child experiences decay at age 5, they are more likely to face similar issues by the time they reach 26. These habits—such as diet and oral hygiene—develop early, and genetics can also play a role.

Why Baby Teeth Are Important

Baby teeth serve several key functions that support your child's health:

  • Speech and development

  • Self-esteem and confidence

  • Healthy eating habits

  • Space for permanent teeth – When a baby tooth is lost prematurely, permanent teeth may shift into the gap, potentially causing orthodontic problems.

Preventative Dentistry for Children and Adults

At Advanced Dental, we offer preventative care for children, adolescents, and adults. For adolescents, the New Zealand Government funds free restorative dental care until the age of 18. However, orthodontic and other specialist care are not included in the funding.

Children can also be seen as privately paying patients. We believe in the continuity of care, and we are here to support your family's dental needs from birth through adulthood.

Government-Funded Care for Children

Children are eligible for free preventative and restorative dental care through the Community Oral Health Services funded by the New Zealand Government.

Your Child's First Visit

To help reduce feelings of anxiety, we recommend reassuring your child that no treatment will be performed during their first visit, unless absolutely necessary. The goal is to make their first dental experience positive and stress-free.

Preventative Care

We believe that preventative dentistry is the most effective method for maintaining long-term oral health. Our preventative services include:

  • Oral hygiene instruction (including tooth brushing techniques)

  • Dietary advice for maintaining healthy teeth

  • Anticipatory guidance for the development of oral health habits

  • Prophylaxis (routine cleaning of teeth)

  • Fluoride treatments

  • Fissure sealants (to protect against cavities)

Restorative Care

When restorative care is required, we provide high-quality dental procedures, including:

  • Comprehensive care for various dental needs

  • General restorative treatments, such as fillings and crowns

  • Dental extractions (if necessary)

  • Referral for general anaesthesia for young children or those who need extra help coping with care at our practice.

At Advanced Dental, we are committed to helping your family achieve and maintain excellent oral health, from childhood through adulthood.
